In cross flow heat exchangers, the two fluids entering the system, flow at right angles to each other. Both fluids are passed through tubes. The upper tubes carry the hot fluid, which exchange heat and exit at a temperature lower than the cold fluid rising from the bottom tubes. The analysis of the cross flow type is more complicated as the temperature varies across the entire flow path. The resulting mean temperature is thus a complex function, depending on the inlet and outlet temperatures of both the hot and cold fluids. Hence the mean temperature is usually calculated with the help of a correction factor, denoted as F. This can be graphically represented for a particular heat exchanger. This method of cross flow helps in more convenient and effective designs of ducts and pipes for various industrial applications. One important use of cross- flow type heat exchangers is in automobile radiators. They are also used in various other industries.
